The President of the ECOWAS Commission Victor Gbeho says joint exploitation of natural resources in the West African region will benefit the entire region.
Mr. Gbeho believes joint exploitation would guarantee a sustainable supply of raw materials for the regional industries and create job opportunities for citizens.
According to Mr. Gbeho, an integrated west African mining industry can provide incentives and regulate mining investment, infrastructure and other factors leading to economic integration of West Africa.
He spoke Friday at the opening of a one-day ECOWAS ministerial session on the mineral resources development program for West Africa.
The West African regional body is seeking to develop a document that would harmonize all mining policies and programs of member states of ECOWAS.
Meanwhile an adhoc committee has been formulated to monitor the implementation of the ECOWAS directive on the harmonization effort.
The Committee would gather comments and views from member states and develop a final draft of the policy for validation and subsequent enforcement.
It is expected that the entire process would be completed at the end of March 2011.
