Teachers Drought Engulfs Bong Mines – No Chemistry, Physics Tutors

Bong Mines — High school students at the Bong Mines Central High School in lower Bong County have completed the first marking period test without a chemistry and physic teacher.

Disclosing this to journalists in Bong Mines, the Principal of the Bong Central High School Madam Margaret Stawart said the volunteer teachers who were teaching the subjects left the school in search of other jobs.

She said prior the teachers’ departure, they complained of not been placed on the Ministry of Education’s payroll, coupled with the school’s inability to provide better incentives for them.

She added that the teachers said they could no longer bear the hardship they were undergoing while teaching at the institution. They said they were leaving the school in search of greener pastures.

Madam Stawart furthered that the only teacher who teaches Mathematic, Science and Biology has also left for Monrovia in to find a better job.

The principal also explained that the elementary and junior high divisions of the school have enough teachers, but the senior high division seriously lacks qualified instructional staff.

Madam Stawart noted that if nothing is done to address the matter, it could lead to mass failure of students in next year’s West African Examination Council (WAEC) Exams.

The issue of science teachers in high school has been a serious problem for many schools. The problem has also claimed the attention of the Ministry of Education and has begum putting into place measures to address the matter, according to Education Ministry sources.

Recently, President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf launched a tuition-free program for students of the University of Liberia’s Teachers Collage. The program, according to President Sirleaf, is intended to train more qualified teachers to enter the classroom.

Many high school students failed the 2009-2010 WAEC Exams, while thousands other flunked the University of Liberia’s entrance exam this year.

Some attributed the failure of the students to lack of trained and qualified teachers in the various high schools, while others point at the students’ inability to pay attention to their teachers.
