Ivory Coast seeks election help from US lawyer

WASHINGTON – Embattled Ivory Coast leader Laurent Gbagbo has hired a prominent American lawyer to determine ways to peacefully resolve the postelection crisis in that West African country.

Lanny Davis says his first advice was to recommend full transparency regarding the Constitutional Council’s Dec. 3 determination that Gbagbo won re-election over opposition leader Alassane Ouattara.

Davis said Monday that he was not asked to determine who won but to evaluate fairly “all the facts regarding the Nov. 28 election.”

International pressure is mounting for Gbagbo to concede defeat to Ouattara, whose victory has been recognized by the United Nations, the United States, former colonizer France and the African Union.
