Liberia: NEC Dragged to Court Over Referendum Results

Liberia has begun to witness the long anticipated lawsuits following the release of the referendum results and subsequent declaration of the final list of qualified presidential candidates by the National Elections Commission (NEC).

The writ of prohibition against the Commission was filed on Tuesday jointly by the Chairman of the ruling Unity Party Varney Sherman and Fred Cheru, a senior Senator from River Gee County.

In the writ, the two lawyers have prayed the Supreme Court to pronounce null and void, Article 1.1 of the of the July 21, 2011 Resolution of NEC on the endorsement of the August 23rd referendum results. They argue that, invalid votes should not have been included in the final counting and declaration of the referendum outcome.

They also added that, the commission counted both the valid and invalid votes cast in determining the results, which he said led to the defeat of the referendum.
